Organic food as a healthy habit

When you go to the grocery store or supermarket to buy fruits or vegetables, do you pick just any produce or are you particular about getting organic foods?  There is a difference between the two and, after our discussion, you may decide that organic foods are the way to go.  Let’s take a look at the benefits of buying organic produce. While both types of produce may look the same, organic foods must be able to meet specific standards of production, including specific growing and processing conditions that are unique to foods that can be labeled “organic”.  For crop foods, the organic foods can’t be grown using any chemical pesticides, non-organic fertilizer, human waste fertilizer or sludge from sewage.  They also cannot be processed using ionizing radiation—a process that kills bacteria but that some people believe is unsafe. Finally, the food can’t be genetically altered.

At one point, organic foods were grown on small farms, particularly those that were family-owned and operated.  In today’s time, however, organic foods are grown on larger farms and are more readily available in most supermarkets, co-ops and health food stores.  In the US, parts of Europe and Japan, the production of organic foods is currently federally regulated and in other countries, specific organic certification is required before these foods can be sold.Organic foods can include fresh vegetables and fruits, which are not processed and come directly from the growers through farmer’s markets, supermarkets and roadside stands.  Many of these products are only available during certain times of the year.  One can also get organic eggs, dairy products and meat in their fresh and unprocessed forms.

Organic eggs are generally provided by free-range chickens and not from those kept in cages in large, egg factories.  Organic meats must not come from animals that have been treated with any growth hormones, steroids or antibiotics.  Processed organic foods can be found in the organic food section of the supermarket but often are more expensive than their conventional food counterparts.  Processed organic foods can include canned products, frozen produce, prepared items and even snack foods.

In truth, processed organic foods need only contain a certain percentage of organic ingredients.  In Australia, for example, a food can be labeled “organic” if it contains at least 95% organic ingredients.  In other countries, however, the percentage can be less than that.  Even so, those non-organic ingredients must be free of artificial food additives and no aspect of the food can be processed using chemical ripening techniques, genetic modification or irradiation.  In some cases, the organic food must be made using energy-saving techniques and packaged in recyclable or biodegradable materials.

It’s not always easy to identify whether or not your food is truly organic.  Sometimes, you need to buy directly from an organic grower in order to be certain the food is organic.  More recently, however, foods that are organic can be identified by governmental labeling, stating that the food is “certified organic.

Your deep core muscles aren't visible, but they could prevent chronic back pain.

Most new runners assume that the best way to improve is simply to run greater and greater distances. While it’s true that going farther and faster will improve your running skills, most coaches and trainers will advise some level of strength training as well. Focusing on your core is a common suggestion. A recent study seems to back this up. In the Journal of Biomechanics, researchers investigated a symptom that has long mystified runners from novice to elite: A good chunk of runners, 14 percent to be exact, experience chronic lower back pain. The results of the new study seem to suggest that weak deep core muscles might be to blame. When these muscles aren’t strong enough, the study found, muscles on other areas of the torso kick in to keep the runner upright, eventually leading to back pain.
To understand the role that these muscles play, the researchers had eight volunteers with minimal running experience run along an indoor track. High-speed cameras and 3D motion detectors analyzed which muscles moved, and how much. Once they created a working computer model for each runner, the scientists simulated what would happen if certain deep muscles were weaker, or shut off completely. As it turns out, when a person can’t use their deep core muscles very well, their bodies still want (and need) to maintain a good running form, and uses superficial muscles to do so.
What’s wrong with that? A muscle is a muscle, right? Not exactly. While the superficial muscles are often targeted in workouts—they give you a six-pack, after all—they are pretty useless when it comes to supporting your spine. The deeper core muscles, which essentially lie beneath and can’t be seen from the outside, do all the heavy spinal lifting.
When you are pounding the pavement for miles at a time, you put a lot of pressure on your spine. If you’ve got strong deep core muscles, that’s no problem. If not, your running could eventually lead to chronic back pain. In fact, the researchers found that when they dialed down deep core muscle strength as low as it could go in their simulation, the load on each vertebrae increased—often by as much as 19 percent. It's easy to see how that kind of pressure could add up to big problems over time.
If you're staring down at your useless six pack in dismay, never fear. You can easily whip your deep core muscles into shape as well. The authors note that while many of the most popular ab workouts, like sit-ups or other exercises that involve a large range of motion, are pretty useless for your deep core, fixed exercises like planks or side bridges go a long way.
It’s important to note that even when you've made these muscles super strong, you won’t likely notice visible results. They'll never give you washboard abs. But they will probably help you run better, and definitely help prevent potentially debilitating chronic back pain. So take a few crunches out of your rotation and throw a nice long plank in—or just do both.

Healthy Eating Plan

Grilled Tuna With Chickpea and Spinach Salad, Baby Spinach With Golden Raisins and Pine Nuts, and Whole-Wheat Bow Tie Pasta With Puttanesca Sauce

A healthy eating plan gives your body the nutrients it needs every day while staying within your daily calorie goal for weight loss. A healthy eating plan also will lower your risk for heart disease and other health conditions.
A healthy eating plan:
  • Emphasizes vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat dairy products
  • Includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts
  • Limits saturated and trans fats, sodium, and added sugars
  • Controls portion sizes

Calories

To lose weight, most people need to reduce the number of calories they get from food and beverages (energy IN) and increase their physical activity (energy OUT).
For a weight loss of 1–1 ½ pounds per week, daily intake should be reduced by 500 to 750 calories. In general:
  • Eating plans that contain 1,200–1,500 calories each day will help most women lose weight safely.
  • Eating plans that contain 1,500–1,800 calories each day are suitable for men and for women who weigh more or who exercise regularly.
Very low calorie diets of fewer than 800 calories per day should not be used unless you are being monitored by your doctor.

A balanced diet for women

Find out how much carbohydrate, protein and fat you should be eating and when. Choose wisely for a healthy diet that keeps you full around the clock...
A selection of food including fruit, vegetables, eggs, wholegrain bread, oils, meat and fish
Women have different daily nutritional requirements to men and, below, our nutritionist has offered guidance and recipe ideas for women seeking a balanced diet for good health. But what exactly is meant by a 'balanced diet'?
The Eatwell Guide defines different types of foods we should be eating and in what proportions. These include some simple rules to follow like getting a minimum of five fruit and veg a day, including wholegrains and choosing more fish, poultry, beans and pulses, less red meat and opting for lower fat, lower sugar dairy foods. But that's not the whole story. How much should you be eating and is there an ideal time to eat protein, carbs or fats? Read on for our guide to healthy eating around the clock.

4 Facts About Peanuts

  • Peanuts are the only "nuts" that have resveratrol, an antioxidant found in grapes, wine and soy that may be heart-healthy and have other benefits. Red wine has the most.
  • The thin papery skins are good for you. That’s where most of the antioxidants are. Some peanut butters contain the skins.
  • The calorie difference between dry- and oil-roasted peanuts is very small. Most of the fat and calories you get come from the peanuts themselves, not from oil that may be added in processing. So pick whichever you prefer. In some cases, roasting actually increases the antioxidants in peanuts.
  • If you have a peanut allergy, you can safely consume most commercially refined peanut oils since they typically undergo a process that removes all the protein—the allergenic part. Cold-pressed, extruded or expeller-pressed peanut oil may retain some protein, however, and should not be considered allergen-free.

Fight Stress With Healthy Eating and get your balance back

Whenever we get too busy or stressed, we all tend
to make poor food choices that will actually
increase stress and cause other problems.  To get
the most of your healthy eating and avoid stress,
follow these simple tips.

Always eat breakfast
Even though you may think you aren't hungry,
you need to eat something.  Skipping breakfast
makes it harder to maintain the proper blood and
sugar levels during the day, so you should always
eat something.

Carry a snack
Keeping some protein rich snacks in your car,
office, or pocket book will help you avoid blood
sugar level dips, the accompanying mood swings, and
the fatigue.  Trail mix, granola bars, and energy
bars all have the nutrients you need.

Healthy munchies
If you like to munch when you're stressed out,
you can replace chips or other non healthy foods
with carrot sticks, celery sticks, or even
sunflower seeds.

Bring your lunch
Although a lot of people prefer to eat fast food
for lunch, you can save a lot of money and actually
eat healthier if you take a few minutes and pack
a lunch at home.  Even if you only do this a few
times a week, you'll see a much better improvement
over eating out.

Stock your home
As important as it is to get the bad food out of
your house, it's even more important to get the good
food in!  The best way to do this is to plan a menu
of healthy meals at snacks at the beginning of the
week, list the ingedients you need, then go shop
for it.  This way, you'll know what you want when
you need it and you won't have to stress over what
to eat.

Organic Milk: Is it Worth It?

Organic milk producers are quick to tell you that their milk is delicious and that it is made from cows untreated with antibiotics or growth hormones and cows not exposed to dangerous pesticides.

Organic milk-producing cows are fed organic feed and are free ranging; the milk is pasteurized and homogenized like regular milk and it even contains vitamin D.  Such claims have brought up the demand for organic milk, sometimes at double the cost of regular milk.  Some consumers wonder, is it worth the added cost?

Some turn to organic milk in the belief that this milk is healthier, while others have  strong environmental or animal rights’ beliefs. Research, however, is limited when it comes to comparing the health benefits of organic milk over conventional milk. This can be confusing to some milk drinkers.

The United States Department of Agriculture has four specific requirements that help in the definition of which milk is organic and which milk is not.  One requirement is that organic milk must come from cows never treated with bovine growth hormone, used to increase milk production.  Some feel that milk treated this way could increase hormone-related cancers or affect growth hormone levels in humans.

Interestingly, bovine growth hormone (BGH) is protein-related, meaning that if a human ingests it, the protein gets destroyed in the acidic environment of the stomach.  In addition, while non-organic milk contains insulin growth factor (IGF-1), an individual would have to drink 95 quarts of milk a day to equal the amount of IGF-1 we produce in our bodies every day. That’s not much of a disadvantage over organic milk.

Several organic web sites have quoted a study showing that vegans have 13% less IGF-1 than non-vegans but, if you study the research more closely, you’ll find that IGF-1 levels were not related to milk consumption in either group nor was organicmilk studied.

Organic milk must come from cows free of antibiotic treatments.  If a cow is treated with an antibiotic, it is removed from the herd for a year.  Still, conventional herds of cows cannot give milk until tests show that the milk is antibiotic-free.

Tanks of milk are tested for the presence of antibiotics on a regular basis.
Another requirement for organic milk is that the cows are fed feed that is grown without pesticides.

Some USDA reports indicate that non-organic milk may be allowed to contain small amounts of specific pesticides, below established tolerance levels. Research has not found any health issues related to pesticides in cow feed and health risks in humans.

Finally, organic milk must come from cows that have “access to pasture”.  Some consumers envision year-round grazing of happy cows.  However, as there is no minimum requirement, organic milk can come from cows that have had limited access to a pasture.

There are those who believe that pasture-fed cows produce more conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)—an essential fatty acid found to be protective against cancer.  Experts, on the other hand, say that grass feeding alone does not definitely lead to increased CLA levels. Cows fed mixed grains and soybeans, in fact, can produce milk with levels of CLA higher than that in organic milk.

Organic milk may taste better to some and is animal-friendly; however it doesn’t necessarily mean it is healthier for you than the much-cheaper conventional milk.

Use Feng shui in your life to get a better life!

The ancient practice of Feng shui is one of the oldest forms of geomancy in the world and can be traced back as far as 3500 years ago in ancient China.  The word literally means wind and water and this practice believes in the notion that qi or vital energy can greatly influence and improve a person’s life by achieving balance and harmony in their surroundings.

To apply this practice means having to recognize the relationship between man and the environment he lives in. The key to this practice is locating the all important qi by arranging objects inside or outside of your home or even your office space so that qi continuously flows freely in the space thereby producing a positive impact in different aspects of your life.  This ancient practice and belief is still being applied today and here are some methods where the art of balance and harmony can make a difference in a person’s life.

Using the Five Phases Method

The five phases method relies in the five elements or phases of fire, earth, metal, water and wood.  These elements interrelate with each other through a creation cycle where fire produces earth, earth produces metal, metal produces water and water produces wood.  Each element also corresponds to a particular direction where water is placed in the north, fire is the south, east is wood, west is metal and earth is the center.

The best way to apply this method is to make sure that your room or the space you live in has a balance of all these elements to produce good qi otherwise too much of a particular element might go against the other elements and produce harmful qi instead.

Using the Flying Stars Method

Probably the most difficult method to apply Feng shui is the flying star method which takes into account the date your house or office was built, a detailed floor plan and the outside environment of the place.  It is similar to having a birth sign in astrology only this time it’s your property’s birth sign.

Although this method can be complex, it is the most accurate of methods and usually done by master practitioners of the craft.  What this method aims to achieve is to harmonize your space by finding out the best elements to enhance it and the elements that need to be avoided.

Using the Eight Mansions Method

The most popular application of Feng shui is the eight mansions method or the Ba Zhai.  This method requires you to calculate your kua number based on your birth date.  This will help you determine your auspicious direction because each kua number corresponds to a particular direction.

This method aims to find out which directions are good for you and which to avoid.  It also helps you find out if you are compatible with that particular area you’re living or staying in.  Finding out the best direction for you and enhancing that space can help you become more productive in terms of career, relationships, health and luck.

Feng shui-Proof Your Life

Testimonies of the benefits of this ancient practice are many and its effectiveness can be traced from ancient times otherwise this practice would not have survived today.  The concept is simple and everyone can benefit with some semblance of balance and harmony in their lives.  It’s just a matter of recognizing the value of qi and making sure everything in your surroundings brings you peace.

Nutrition after '50s

Healthy eating and nutrition for the elderly is
greatly impacted by several factors, one of them
being a change in body composition.  During the
later years in life, the body will lose bone and
muscle and gain fat because the hormones aren't
very active anymore.

There are many factors which hinder an elderly
person's health.  The information below will help
you to lead a healthy life - no matter how old you
may be.

Water
Water in the body decreases with age, so many older
folks will become dehydrated very easily.  Sometimes
they won't feel thirsty, while other times it's
too much work to pour a glass a water.  With this
in mind, it's recommended that they drink at least
1 ounce of water for every 2.2 pounds of weight.

Protein
At this stage in life, protein is very important.
Protein is needed to support a healthy immune
system and prevent the wasting of muscle.  Since
energy needs are less, older folks should eat high
quality protein such as eggs, lean meats, poulty,
and fish.

Carbs and fiber
Carbohydrates are the main source of energy for
the entire body.  You can find carbs in bread,
cereals, pasta, and other grain products.  A diet
that's high in fiber and water will help to
prevent constipation as well.

Fat
Fat intake for the elderly should be limited, not
eliminated.  You can limit fat by choosing lean meats,
low fat dairy products, and food preperation
methods that don't include frying.

Iron
For the elderly, iron deficiency can be seen with
those who aren't eating much.  Good sources for
iron include lean red meats or breakfast cereals.

Zinc
Zinc intake is normally with the elderly, and to
make matters worse, it's not absorbed very well
either.  Meat, poultry, and fish should be a part
of your diet to help you meet the requirements for
zinc.

Calcium
Calcium is one ingredient that most elderly folks
simply aren't getting enough of.  Most believe
that milk upsets their stomach, and therefore they
will avoid it.  They should be getting around 1,500
mg of calcium a day, and nonfat powdered milk can
be used in recipes as a substitute for milk.  Other
foods such as yogurt, low fat cheese, and broccoli
can also help you meet the requirements for calcium.

Vitamin B12
In order to absorb the benefits of B12, the intrinsic
facotr must be produced by the stomach.  Most elderly
people suffer from a deficiency in B12 because they
have a condition known as atrophic gastritis.  This
condition causes inflammation of the stomach,
bacterial overgrowth, and the intrinsic factor.
Without the intrinsic factor, this vitamin can be
absorbed.

Each one of the above nutrients are needed to keep
an aged body in good health.  Elderly individuals
should try to stay active and strive for a well
balanced diet.  Even though the aged body isn't the
same as it used to be, proper care and the right
nutrients can help the elderly enjoy a healthy and
long life.

Benefits of Hoodia Diet

Hoodia: The Easy Diet

Obesity has become a major health issue in America. Coupled with high social standards on beauty and style, people are desperate to loose weight. Unfortunately with all the hype that's surrounding every diet product no one is sure which of them actually works. Fortunately nature has provided us with the solution for a much safer way of loosing weight. Hoodia diet was introduced in America in 2004 and has been the most popular natural weight loss supplement ever since.

The diet has been featured in several shows such as Oprah, The Today Show, 60 minutes and BBC. It's the new way of loosing weight, burning fat and reducing calorie intake targeting the source of weight gain: eating.

It comes from a plant so what?

Hoodia is a genus consisting of 13 species of plants that is fount in Southern Africa. To the locals, it is referred to as the "bushman's hat" or "Queen of Namib".  One of its species called Hoodia Gordinni is used for weight loss.

The plant is manufactured into diet pills and supplements. It works by naturally suppressing a dieter's appetite. The supplement has chemical components that act on the satiety center of the brain. The satiety center of the brain is located at the hypothalamus. When the pill works on the hypothalamus it sends a signal to the brain that it has eaten enough food.

This way the dieter's hunger is suppressed. By eating less there are fewer fats to burn. It also enables the individual to reduce their calorie intake in a much comfortable way. They don't have to follow a strict regimen. It's suitable for individuals who don't have time to prepare portions sized meals. Dieter's don't have to restrain themselves from eating the food that they want which would later lead to a food binge.

The dieter will feel full the rest of the day after taking the pill. They wouldn't be thinking about food at all once the pill has taken effect. It helps to control unnecessary cravings such as midnight snacks which are much harder to burn. By focusing on the individual instead of the food, it's much easier to loose weight. If you have problems with eating then why not stop it?

The diet comes in different forms aside from pills. They also come in patches, powder (to make shakes) and liquid form (mixed your favorite beverage). There are also stronger doses of capsules for serious dieters.

Dieters have to remember to purchase supplements that contain 100% Hoodia. Since it has become famous in the market there are a lot of cheap imitations circulating in the internet. Make sure that the manufacturer has a C.I.T.E.S certificate and an Analytical report. This will guarantee what you are purchasing the original product. The supplement can be expensive to make sure that you get your money's worth.

Before buying the product make sure to read the label. Look for a money back guarantee. The supplement will not work unless it contains 100% of the original ingredient.

The diet comes from a plant which makes it 100% natural and safe. Unlike other drug supplements it does not contain other ingredients that cause unpleasant side effects. If you want a hassle free diet then this one is for you. If you want to loose weight in the most convenient and natural way this diet may be the one that you are looking for.

STOP EATING TILAPIA ASAP! READ ABOUT THE DISGUSTING REASONS WHY!!!

Stop Eating Tilapia ASAP! Read About the Disgusting Reasons Why!!!
Tilapia, the third most consumed fish in America, has been under fire for some time now as there’s mounting evidence that this fish is grown in China in bad farming practices.
On one hand, tilapia is quite inexpensive, can be bought skinless and boneless and is really tasty as it doesn’t pack the familiar fish taste.
But, the real problem with tilapia is linked to its origin. Most of the tilapia we consume today is farm-bred instead of wild. Today, it’s virtually impossible to come across wild tilapia on the market. Even, restaurants mainly serve farm-bred tilapia. In fact, it’s such large scale farming, that thousands of fish are harvested each day.
The thing is that while wild tilapia eats lake plants and algae, farm-bred tilapia is fed on soy pellets and GMO corn. Healthy fish oil in wild tilapia is basically lacking in farm-bred one. Actually, farm-raised tilapia is not health beneficial for several reasons.
Why Farm-Bred Tilapia is Bad for Your Health
  1. Inflammation
Recent studies confirm that consuming farm-bred tilapia can lead to inflammation. In fact, eating tilapia can worsen already existing inflammation caused by a number of health issues including asthma, heart disease, and arthritis. People often wrongly believe that they’re getting their omega-3 fatty acid from the fish oil in tilapia to reduce the risk of heart attacks, but the real truth is that tilapia is a much more serious risk factor for inflammation than bacon or hamburgers.
  1. Cancer Causing Pollutants
Farmed-raised fish is generally exposed to cancerous organic pollutants 10 times more than wild tilapia. Moreover, one of the main ingredients in the feed is chicken poop. And, pig and duck waste processed into fish food is also quite common.
  1. Higher Pesticides and Antibiotics
Farm-bred fish generally pack higher content of pesticides and antibiotics. This basically comes down to the fact that farm fish are bred in a crowd, which makes them more susceptible to diseases. That’s why they’re often given antibiotics so as to keep them healthy. Pesticides are also part of their menu in order to kill sea lice. These pesticides are in fact so strong that can kill wild salmon when exposed to them accidentally. This is not all because these pesticides are then released into the sea, which then produces toxic effects on other marine life when ingested.
  1. Low Omega-3 to Omega-6 Ratios
Farm-raised tilapia packs less healthy nutrients than the wild. For one thing, the omega 3 fatty acids in farm-bred tilapia are not as beneficial for us as opposed to the omega fatty acids in wild tilapia. Plus, farm-raised tilapia also contains less protein. The fish are raised in pools, which makes them fattier and they often contain more omega 6 fatty acids. Over consumption of omega 6 fatty acids makes us more prone to inflammation. In farm-bred tilapia the omega 3 to omega 6 ratios are misbalanced, which in turn negatively impacts our bodies.
  1. High Dioxin Levels
Last, but not least, farm-bred tilapia also contains higher dioxin levels. These actually pack 11 times more dioxins than wild tilapia. Dioxins are not only toxic, but can also affect your proper body and can even trigger cancer development. The worst thing is that as soon as dioxins get into the body, they take a long time to get out – around 7-11 years is half of what it takes for dioxin to be removed from the body.
All in all, it’s important to know that the farm-bred tilapia is deficient in the vital nutrients your body needs. Instead, you should opt for healthier fish or wild tilapia.

Exercise and blood pressure

Do you want to take control of your blood pressure? If so, exercise may be the key for you to do just that. Many people may not realize exercise can help you control your blood pressure. Fortunately, it is all rather simple.

As you probably know, you are more prone to high blood pressure as you age. Unfortunately, we all age and this cannot be helped. But controlling your blood pressure can be helped.
By exercising you can prevent risks of high blood pressure which can cause stroke and kidney disease. If you already have high blood pressure, exercising can help you get it under control.

As you exercise your heart gets stronger. When your heart is stronger it can pump more blood more easily causing less pressure on your arteries. While exercise may not work for everyone you can easily lower your blood pressure by around ten millimeters.
Even if you do not have high blood pressure, you can take these precautions to prevent from getting it. Along with controlling your blood pressure you can lose weight or maintain your desired weight which also affects your blood pressure.
Overweight people are prone to having high blood pressure and an increased risk of stroke or kidney or heart diseases. If this is you, get moving and start exercising! This doesn't mean you have to overdo yourself, take it slow at first and work your way up. You will start feeling better as you continue a regular routine.
It is suggested to do at least thirty minutes of exercise a day if possible. Thirty minutes can be hard to do for some people, mainly because they can't find the time. If this is the case, you can do short bursts of exercise. You could exercise for ten minutes at a time throughout the day. At the end of the day you've done thirty minutes.
Like with starting any exercise routine, you will want to talk with your doctor first. There are certain things you will have to have your doctor's okay for. If you are a man over forty or a woman over fifty it might be better to talk with your doctor first
Smoking increases blood pressure as well as makes it hard for some people to exercise. Being overweight has an effect on everything and you definitely want to consult your doctor before starting an exercise program.

Having a chronic health condition or high cholesterol and even high blood pressure can put you at risk when exercising. Be sure to talk to your doctor first. If you do not visit the doctor regularly, do so now. It is better to know exactly what health you are in before doing any strenuous activity or even exercising.
Always warm up before starting an exercise routine. Begin slowly so you can slowly build the intensity. Be sure to continuously breathe throughout your routine. Holding your breath can cause your blood pressure to increase and the key of exercising to help control or lower your blood pressure.

If you experience any discomforts or pain while exercising notify your doctor immediately. It is better to take full precaution even if it ends up being something little. Once you start your exercise program, you want to track your progress.

A great way to do this is if you can't see your doctor regularly; purchase a home blood pressure monitoring device. You want to check your pressure before you begin and when you are finished. You want to make sure it's working and how much it's working.

By exercising you are lowering your chances of getting high blood pressure and if you already have it, you are helping to control it. This means you are lessening your risks of strokes or heart diseases. It is never too late to start, no matter your age, gender, or ethnicity. Talk with your doctor today about an exercise program that is right for you. Your body will thank you in the end.

Coffee and oral health

The coffee is for many people one of the most favorite beverages.
Apart from our emotional connection with coffee, new scientific facts come to show off another one, not very known to date, positive effect on our health.

According to a recent study, published in the prestigious scientific journal International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, the high consumption of coffee is associated with protection against oral cancer. At this point it should be noted that oral cancer is the eighth most common in-line form of cancer worldwide.

As part of the study evaluated the results of previous epidemiological studies, which included data from 4,037 cases of oral cancer and 1,872,231 people.

The results showed that people who had a high consumption of coffee had a significantly reduced risk of developing cancer of the mouth, compared to them that did not drink much coffee.

Specifically those who consumed high amounts of coffee had a 30% lower risk of developing oral cancer than those in the lowest coffee intake point.

As experts point out that the protective effect of coffee may be due to a variety of biologically active components, which in addition to caffeine is caffeine acid and two diterpenes called , and kafestol and  kacheol.

Kiwi: What are the benefits of health

Kiwifruit is food dense in nutrients and low in calories. Possible health benefits include a healthy skin texture, reducing blood pressure and the prevention of heart disease and stroke.
Kiwi is rich in vitamin C.

In a medium size contains:
Calories 42
Protein 0.8 grams
Total fat: 0.4 grams
Fiber: 2.1 grams
Vitamin C: 64 mg
Vitamin A: 3 micrograms
Iron: 0.2 mg
Potassium: 252 mg
Folic acid: 17 mkrogrammaria
The kiwi also contains vitamin E, copper, vitamin K, choline, magnesium, and phosphorus.

Possible benefits to health
Many studies have shown that increased consumption of plant foods such as kiwi reduces the risk of obesity and mortality.
Nice skin: Collagen dependent vitamin C, which acts in the body as an antioxidant that helps prevent damage from stupid, pollution and tobacco, softens wrinkles and improves overall skin texture.
Better sleep: According to research on the effect of kiwifruit consumption on sleep quality in adults with sleep problems, eating of the fruit may potentially improve sleep onset and the duration and effectiveness in adults with sleep disorders .
Heart Health: The fiber and potassium in the kiwi support heart health. An increase in potassium prevention along with reduction of sodium intake is the most important dietary change you can do to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, according to Mark Houston, the Vanderbilt Medical School.
In a survey, those who consumed 4.069 mg of potassium a day had a 49% lower risk of death from ischemic heart disease compared with those who consumed less potassium.
The high potassium intake is also associated with a reduced risk of stroke, protection from loss of muscle mass, maintenance of bone density and reduce the creation of kidney stones.
Reduced pressure: Because of the high potassium content, kiwi can help neutralize the effect of sodium. It is possible that low potassium intake be the same big risk factor for hypertension and high sodium intake.
High intake of potassium is associated with 20% lower risk of death from any cause.
Preventing constipation: Many studies have reported that the Kiwi might have slight laxative effect and could be used as a nutritional supplement, particularly in elderly patients with constipation.
Regular consumption appeared to promote the creation of softer and more frequent stools production.
Risks and precautions
Beta blockers can cause increased levels of potassium in the blood. Foods high in potassium, such as bananas should be eaten in moderation when someone takes beta blockers.
Consuming large quantities of potassium can be harmful for those who do not have full kidney function. If the kidneys are not able to excrete excess potassium from the blood can be fatally.

How to treat baby acnes, some tips

Baby acne is not uncommon, but it often catches new parents off guard. It appears like "the usual" acne - red bumps, some with white heads. What causes a baby to get acne? Is there anything you can do about it?

What Causes Baby Acne?

The exact cause of acne is tricky to pinpoint with any age. With babies, acne, if it occurs, shows up from 2 to 4 weeks of age. It is usually attributed to hormonal shifts and surges that occur in the womb and during childbirth. These hormonal changes and shifts affect baby's skin for weeks after birth.

In rare instances, baby acne can be a sign of a hormonal imbalance or disorder.

Other possible causes include irritation from detergents, spit-up, or that ubiquitous baby drool.

Some experts suggest that baby acne may indicate allergies, particularly allergies to foods such as dairy products or soy. These substances can reach babies through the mother's milk or in formula.

Will It Go Away?

Baby acne can last up to six months, with breakouts flaring and subsiding. You might notice that baby's acne flares when he or she is sick or teething. It will eventually go away; in the meantime, here are some treatment options.

What Can I Do About My Baby's Acne?

If you suspect a hormonal imbalance or problem - such as baby acne that goes on for months - you will need to discuss treatment options with your doctor. For baby acne that is not the result of hormone problems, here are some common and alternative treatments.

Note: Experts warn not to put any adult acne treatments on baby's skin, such as retinoid creams, benzoyl peroxide, or medicated cleansers.

* Topical treatments - Most of the time, babies with acne just need a gentle wash twice a day, either with plain water or with a mild soap. If the acne is severe, your doctor may prescribe a gentle, medicated topical treatment that is intended for babies.

There are some natural treatments you can employ, too. If breastfeeding, applying some breast milk to the affected areas with a cotton ball may help. Some plain yogurt mixed with a little honey - 1/4 teaspoon of honey per 2 tablespoons of yogurt - makes a gentle, probiotic cleanser for baby's skin. If possible, rinse baby's skin with filtered or distilled water. Tap water may have harsh chemicals that might worsen the problem.

* Dietary considerations - If you're a nursing mother, consider cutting out dairy and soy products to see if your baby's skin improves. You can also try eliminating citrus fruits.

If you feed formula, you might seek out a hypo-allergenic formula that is not dairy or soy-based. * Of course it’s important to get advice from your pediatrician before cutting out any essential foods from your diet while breastfeeding.

* Environmental adjustments - Baby's clothing, bedding, and toys should be washed with mild, hypo-allergenic detergent. Brightly-colored fabrics may contain irritating dyes, so natural fabrics are probably best to avoid allergic reactions.

Babies need some fresh air and sunshine, too - health professionals point out the benefits of moderate sun exposure for baby's health. And fresh air is good for everyone's skin.

Organic meat on your table

Organic meat differs from regular meat in the way the animal farmer raised the animal priorto butchering. Organic meats must be certified through one of several certification organizations, including the Midwest Organic Services Association.
Farmers must follow strict organic guidelines in the production of the meat product.
Meat certified organic are often born on farms and raised with the utmost of respect and animal dignity.  Beef cattle are not raised in pens but are often free to roam the farm with unrestricted access to water, food, sunshine and outdoor air at all times.

Everything that goes into an organic farm animal must also be organic.  The pastures the animals graze in must be certified organic themselves.  Organic forage and grains grown organically must be fed to the animals and organic pest control must be utilized on these farms.  No synthetic or chemical pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers are applied to local fields or pastures
.
Organic animal farms must apply specific conservation practices to preserve the natural surroundings and the soil in the area.  Water is not wasted and recycling is used whenever possible.
No organic meat can be certified organic if the animal has been fed any antibiotics, growth hormones, steroids or animal byproducts.  Animals are fed what they eat in the pastures and organically grown farm products, such as organic hay.  Water is free from contaminants.

In many cases, animals grown on organic animal farms are removed from the program if they ever become sick enough to require antibiotics.  They are removed from the herd as soon as their illness is discovered.  While antibiotics are an excellent way to treat bacterial infections, there is always the risk of developing resistant strains of bacteria and no one knows the health effects to consumers who eat meat treated with antibiotics.

Antibiotics speed the growth of cattle that seem to grow using less feed but, because of resistances, sick animals often can’t be well treated and often die of their illness.
Growth hormones, eliminated from the production of organic meats, are given to cattle to speed up their growth on less feed.
This is another situation where scientists do not know the effect of this practice on consumers who eat non-organic meats.

Most organic meat comes from animals grown from birth on small farms in which the animal has free range to move around on the pasture and to eat when it wants to.  Such animals generally are healthier than their conventional counterparts and are treated more humanely.  Animals are allowed to mate as they wish, adding to the sustainability of the farming practice.

Much of the organic meat is derived from bull meat, which is some of the leanest meat around.  Farmers who raise bulls and sell them (called seed stock producers) must provide affidavits stating that their bulls were not raised using antibiotics or growth hormones from the time of their birth. Such affidavits generally go back at least twenty months prior to the time that the organic farmer purchased the animal.

Organic meats, particularly organic meat, may be somewhat more expensive than conventionally-grown meat.  In general, however, the meat is fresh and the consumer can guarantee that there is nothing unhealthy in the organic meat product.

ADHD and Diet

The issue of the nutrition connection with ADHD has been subjected to multiple studies, and generally, those studies have pointed to strong connections between this disorder and nutrition. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies, food allergies, pesticide exposure from non-organic produce, etc. all have implications in the symptoms of ADHD.

Here are some of the ways that nutrition is connected to ADHD, and the dietary considerations involved.

Artificial Colors and Preservatives

Sources say that artificial colors and preservatives are not necessarily instrumental in exacerbating ADHD symptoms; but for those who do have sensitivities to these substances, removing them from the diet has been known to produce dramatic results. Cutting out artificial colors and preservatives does not cause harm, so eliminating these things from the child's diet and watching for symptom improvement is a viable course of action.

Gluten Sensitivity

The possible connection between gluten sensitivity and ADHD is interesting. Many children with ADHD also have celiac disease, or gluten intolerance. In this disorder, gluten (a protein found in wheat and other grains) inflames the intestinal lining and can eventually permeate the intestinal walls, creating leaky gut syndrome. This causes proteins and other undigested food particles to enter the bloodstream, where they can cause a host of problems.

Many parents of children with ADHD have found success in eliminating gluten from their child's diet, allowing the gut to heal and stopping the cycle of inflammation.

Iron Deficiency

Symptoms of iron deficiency (poor attention span, behavioral problems) can mimic those of ADHD. Some doctors recommend an iron supplement for all children regardless of ADHD diagnosis. So it's a good idea to test for iron deficiency if your child is exhibiting symptoms reminiscent of ADHD.

Low Blood Sugar

Another problem that can mimic ADHD symptoms is low blood sugar. The inability to concentrate, "the shakes" and jitters, and hyperactivity are all symptoms of low blood sugar. Not all kids react to low blood sugar with these symptoms, and not all kids suffer visibly from long periods of not eating (or eating the wrong kinds of foods). But in some children, low blood sugar can present dramatic symptoms.

The best way to alleviate these symptoms is with a healthy, whole foods diet that is low in sugar and includes healthy snacks. Children should always have an adequate breakfast, too.

Organic Foods

Because of recent studies linking ADHD and pesticide exposure, many parents choose to have their families eat only organic produce. This minimizes pesticide exposure by ingestion.

Tips for Managing Acne

While the old adage that "eating chocolate gives you zits" is considered out-of-date, new evidence indicates that your diet does play a role in the health of your skin. If you are suffering from acne or someone in your family is having trouble with it, here are some nutritional tips that may help.

Acne in Babies

Nutritional approaches to managing baby acne usually involve changes in the mother's diet or in the formula type, since baby acne usually occurs in newborns. For nursing mothers, here are some tips:

* Cut out dairy and soy products from your diet (these two substances are common allergens in newborns).
* Cut out citrus fruits from you diet as well, as citrus fruits can transfer to breast milk and may cause skin inflammation.
* Take in healthy amounts of good fats like flax and olive oil.

For those who feed formula, check with your pediatrician to make sure no allergies to soy and/or dairy present in the formula are worsening the acne.

Teens

As a teen, it can be really tempting to indulge in junk food. And many teens have those amazing metabolisms that allow them to eat pizza and nachos three times a day and not gain weight! But nutritional tips for acne healing still apply to teens.
These include a recommendation to eat low-glycemic foods.

Some interesting studies have shown a connection between insulin levels and acne - higher insulin correlating with increased acne. If you eat lots of sugar and refined grains, your insulin levels will increase in order to keep blood sugar levels stable in the midst of an influx of sugar. The increased insulin levels may worsen acne. So in a very real sense, sugar may make your acne worse.

Low-glycemic foods include lean protein, whole grains, and vegetables. Whole fruits have a lower glycemic level than juice.

Here are some specific ways you can incorporate or substitute high-glycemic foods with low-glycemic ones:

* Homemade popcorn instead of potato chips or corn chips
* Granola instead of sugary cereal
* Naturally-sweetened beverages instead of sugary drinks like colas
* Whole grain pasta instead of refined semolina pasta
* Whole grain breads (homemade if possible) instead of white

Adults

Many of the dietary guidelines for teens apply to adults, too - insulin may still play a role in adult acne. So switching to low-glycemic foods might be a good idea (it's considered a healthier diet anyway). Other tips for adults include:

* Include healthy fats in the diet
* Take a high-quality multi-vitamin supplement
* Limit sugar and refined grains
* Emphasize high-fiber foods
